Life cycle Vs Workflow

Product Life cycle management (PLM) is the process of managing the entire life cycle of a product from conceptual design, engineering design and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products.
Product data management software or Product Life cycle Management software tends to use combinations of life cycles and workflows to manage information of any products related to their organization. These terms are confused, life cycles and workflows are different – though they often work together as product related information are created, processed and eventually archived or deleted.
Apparently they may appear similar from their ability to invoke predefined server process while the document passes through different life cycle stages or workflow activities. However, they are fundamentally different from each other.

Workflow:

A workflow is a defined sequence of activities that represent a business process. Workflow is actually a business process involving documents passing through various activities and moving from one business state to another. Workflow is activated or triggered by the life cycle states.
  • A workflow is what people do to an object.
  • A workflow is a network of activities.

Life cycle:

A Life cycle is a series of states (i.e., stages or gates) that an Item instance traverses during its existence. A Life Cycle consists of States, which are basically a series of actions and steps, and Transitions, which are basically paths between the different states.
  • A life cycle is what happens to an object.
  • A life cycle is a set of linearly connected states.
